National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - September 30, 2025
September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on the lasting harm caused by residential schools and the ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada. As the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation reminds us, “It’s not just a part of who we are as Survivors – it’s a part of who we are as a nation.” This is a call to all of us, individuals, organizations, and institutions, to make real, structural changes so that our actions align with our words.
Today is also Orange Shirt Day, a time to honour survivors, remember the children who never made it home, and commit to building a future where Indigenous communities are respected, safe, and thriving. Learn more at orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.
Reconciliation is not a single day, but an ongoing, year-round recognition that requires us to support Indigenous leadership, rights, and self-determination. It also calls us to respect the deep ancestral relationship Indigenous peoples hold with the land, recognizing stewardship as a key part of decolonization and our shared responsibility as settlers on these territories.
In our sector, reconciliation also means addressing inequities in access to culturally relevant child and family services, amplifying Indigenous voices through knowledge sharing, supporting and funding Indigenous-led organizations, and embedding land acknowledgements and Indigenous histories into programming. These are not symbolic gestures, but real commitments we are accountable for and continually striving to strengthen.
The Jane/Finch Centre stands with Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island and in our Black Creek community. We recognize the urgent need to honour the 94 calls to action through equitable funding and resource redistribution), meaningful reconciliation, and full implementation of the 94 Calls to Action. We are committed to ensuring that everything we do, online, in our buildings, and in the community, supports healing, justice, and equity.
