Black History Month

As today marks the first day of Black History Month, the Jane/Finch Centre reaffirms our commitment to the pursuit of social justice and service delivery through an anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework.

Let us not forget that this work extends beyond February. Anti-Black racism persists, deeply ingrained in the fabric of our society, in a country built on Indigenous displacement and the exploitation of people of African descent. Our work is not merely to acknowledge an ongoing history, but to also actively address systems of anti-Black racism, and carve out spaces for Black joy, prosperity and self-determination.

The focus for this month is on Black Excellence, celebrating heritage and building futures. This serves as a reminder that history is ongoing; we have a responsibility not just to the past, but to building alternative futures.

Throughout the month, we will be sharing events and programming happening at the Jane/Finch Centre, and across Toronto that celebrate and honour the Black community.
