Porter: This graduation day for poor single mothers could be last of its kind
November 10, 2009
A yellow school bus pulled away from the aging highrises of Jane-Finch Monday morning, filled with 24 young single mothers, heading for success.
Their lips shined with gloss, their earrings dangled, their skirts were freshly ironed. One wore sparkling gold shoes with giant bows around the ankles that she'd just finished piecing together with spray paint and ribbon. They gossiped, giggled, and erupted
into song – not a care in the world – as a neighbourhood of poverty and crime faded away and the city's centre of wealth and power came into view.
