United Way Workplace Campaign

The Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre was the proud recipient of the 2008 United Way Spirit Award (agency campaign category). The Centre ran an exemplary fundraising campaign using consistent and clear communications to its staff, Board and community members about the importance of United Way’s support to our agency and the community. We achieved a 52% increase in donations and a 100 % participation rate.

The Jane/Finch Centre became a member of United Way in 1979. The Centre’s staff, volunteers and participants join in the United Way fundraising walkathon every year. Many other activities were organised during the campaign to raise funds. The Centre was nominated twice for the Spirit Award, first in 2005 and again in 2007, but fell short of cinching this coveted award. Staff resolved to make an extra effort in 2008 despite the intense social challenges being faced by the community and the sharp downturn in the economy.

The campaign kicked off on Sunday, October 26 with the CN Tower Climb where we had 30 participants. We introduced the theme “Feel the Spirit” and encouraged everyone to assist in the many events we had planned. For the first time, the Centre participated in the Scotia Bank Street Rat Race, a 5k fun-run and costume party held in the heart of Toronto’s business district. Other events were Early Years Spa Day, 50/50 Raffle Draw, Bake Sales, Family Photo Shoot and the Payroll Deduction Plan. Our goal was to increase the contribution by 50% over last year and to obtain 100% participation from staff and the Board of Directors.

Thank you to everyone who assisted the Jane/Finch Centre in winning the Spirit Award. The award is on display in the front office at 4400 Jane Street.
